Cape Fear Officials Association

	The Cape Fear Officials Association (CFOA) was started in 1986 by Carl T. Miller when he became an official with NCHSAA in Baseball and Softball. Mr Miller was appointed Booking Agent, now "Regional Supervisor of Officials."Carl took over as Booking Agent from Marion (Tinkey) Rogers for Fast Pitch Softball and from Jim Harris for Baseball. Now, 27 years later, the Association is growing. Membership is now at 120 which includes High School and recreational officials. Our membership includes officials from a wide area of Southeastern North Carolina . We hold one annual meeting in January for all members on the 2nd Sunday in January. This kicks off our High School program. We serve lunch and a business meeting follows. We go over the NCHSAA meeting in January for Regional Supervisors of Officials and rule books are given out. Executive board members attend and an election of officers is held every two years. We officiate two sports: baseball and fast pitch softball that includes High School JV and Varsity teams, recreation leagues, Semi-Pro Baseball (CMBL a wooden bat league), Dixie Youth Baseball and Softball, and Babe Ruth Baseball and Softball. We officiate both District and State Tournaments in youth ball. We train and use new officials for our recreation leagues and some move on to our High School program starting out in JV and then Varsity as they get more experience. This program has been very successful. In the last 27 years, the CFOA has had over 50 officials attend UNCW and Cape Fear Community College with the help of money earned from the part-time job of umpiring. We officiate Baseball and Softball games for High Schools in Brunswick, Columbus, New Hanover, Pender and Sampson Counties, Middle School in New Hanover County and Pender County and recreation games in Brunswick County and New Hanover County, for a total of more than 3000 games per year. We are proud of the Officials of the CFOA who last year donated their time on the ball field one Saturday to benefit Childhood Cancer Research. We worked games at the Cape Fear Optimist and Winter Park Optimist Clubs for a donation of $5000.00 toward this cause. This is an annual event. CFOA and NCHSAA encourage new officials to join our local Association. We are always looking for new officials to develop and train in the rules and mechanics of umpiring. Rule 3-2-5 states, “Headwear (caps, visors, headbands, ribbons, etc.) may be mixed. If worn, they must be white, black, beige or school colors (the colors are not required to be the same for team members). The logo may be any color. Flat items, no longer than 2 inches, used to control the hair, such as bobby pins, barrettes and hair clips are permitted. Plastic visors, bandannas and hair-beads are prohibited.” We will be sending this information to our schools informing them that the restriction on wearing ribbons has been lifted.
